In many contexts, competition over land, natural resources, and economic opportunities – exacerbated by climate change and poorly regulated investments – can fuel tensions and undermine social cohesion. Our programme responds to these challenges by strengthening dialogue, promoting responsible business conduct, and supporting community-led solutions that foster long-term stability.
What We Do
- Conflict Prevention and Social Cohesion
We facilitate inclusive dialogue and engagement processes that bring together communities, government, and private sector actors to address grievances, build trust, and prevent conflict. - Climate Justice and Resource Governance
We address climate-related drivers of conflict, including land use, water scarcity, and environmental degradation, by promoting equitable and sustainable natural resource management. - Business, Human Rights and Peace
We work with businesses to adopt responsible and conflict-sensitive practices, ensuring respect for human rights and minimizing negative impacts on communities and the environment. This includes the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms such as mediation and traditional dispute resolution mechanisms. - Inclusive Livelihoods and Just Transition
We support pathways to sustainable and equitable livelihoods, particularly for communities affected by climate change and economic transitions.
Our Impact
- Reduced conflicts linked to climate change and resource use
- Stronger relationships between communities, government, and businesses
- Increased corporate accountability and responsible investment
- Enhanced community resilience and social cohesion
- Better uptake of Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanisms
Program Activities
Webinar on Access to Remedy
CEPCJ was well represented by Florence Shako in a webinar hosted by the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators, UNDP, the United Nations Human Rights Special Procedures and the International Law Association – Nigeria Branch. The webinar was titled ‘Access to Remedy: The Role of Alternative Dispute Resolution in the Business and Human Rights Agenda’. This webinar took place on June 6th, 2024.
June 12th and 13th 2024: Regional Workshop on Strengthening Accountability and Access to Remedy for Project-Affected Communities
CEPCJ was invited to join a regional workshop on the 12th and 13th of June in Nairobi, Kenya to discuss the role and activities of the Independent Accountability Mechanisms (IAMs) / Complaints Mechanisms from several International Financial Institutions (IFIs).
The workshop brought together participants from Burundi, Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
Independent Accountability Mechanisms were established from the 1990s onwards to handle complaints from people impacted by environmental and social impacts of investment projects financed by multilateral and bilateral development banks. Given the support that civil society organizations (CSOs) provide to communities who are affected by these projects, IAMs conduct outreach events together with CSOs to spread awareness about their services. This helps both parties to broaden their perspectives.
